Caution Tape

Caution Tape Vol. 1 is the debut compilation project from Trinidad and Tobago artiste Nathanael. The 26 year-old, relatively known for a more unique melodic approach, with his signature blend of urban r&b and Caribbean sound releases his first full offering this August 2014.

According to Nathanael, the mixtape project was intended to embody varying aspects relating to the theme of caution:

·      an alert to social ills and perils currently gripping our societies... CAUTION!

·      an alert to those members of society wanting to be part of the solution to be careful in doing so, especially given the limitations placed on them by those in authority possessing the power to influence and foster change… CAUTION!

·      a response to cautionary warnings issued to those bent on speaking out against the rampaging spiritual immorality in our homes, in our schools, in our families & in our societies… CAUTION!

·      an ironic reversal wherein which the voice of the church in society espouses a cautionary warning of its own, declaring that they will speak out against these ills - going on record to state that their lips will not be taped… CAUTION!

The reeling tape represents Nathanael’s desire to speak out amidst a barrage of cautionary warnings, voicing his perspectives through music, as depicted by the cassette tape.

The tomb, a symbol of death, suggests a loss of life and destruction – a realization of an end. The bordering chalked lines indicate a measure of finality, mirroring that of a modern crime scene. This crime scene, however, finds itself juxtaposed with the presence of the cross – a symbol of resurrection and renewed life.

The unraveling of the tape which takes form over the grave and around the cross represents an emanation of biblical truth & life into a society often said to be dying and decaying… Proceed with CAUTION!

This poster is in support of all those families who lost love ones in the garment factory collapse. While the western world are dying to purchase the latest brands, unfortunately the garment factory workers in Bangladesh die making these very said clothes.

Protest Animation

Protest is seasoned in local vernacular and tells the story of protesting through the eyes of the unsuspecting trini. It reflects the cultural nuances of Trinidad and Tobago through the creative expressions of the spoken word. The call and response element of the storyteller to his audience is invoked by the line at the end of each situation “Protest, dat is Protest”. The marriage of the animation and the spoken word engages a wider viewership as they are immersed into the experiences of the protagonist. The story includes characters created by storyteller Taharqa Obika and to be illustrated by Seon Thompson. These Characters are central to everyday life for many a Trinbagonian. I have been working on this for quite some time now and finally I am getting a bit more time to get it done. I would be putting up images of my process as I go along so stay tuned.

Poster inspired by Self-taught Prodigy

I stumbled upon a video of a 15 year old, self-taught engineering whiz from Sierra Leone, who collected spare parts from the trash to build batteries, generators and transmitters. Kelvin Doe became the youngest person in history to be invited to the "Visiting Practitioner's Program" at MIT. His story was so captivating that I immediately had to create a poster in honor of this young man. We complain about the lack of resources readily available to us and we use that as an excuse to underachieve, but Kelvin has defied the odds and persevered in the midst of his circumstances. And his main purpose to succeed was not money but simply to help his family acquire a better standard of living. Hats off to him.

50 Proud Poster Presentations.

So I got the opportunity to present my 50 Proud posters to The Honourable Vernella Alleyne-Toppin Minister in the Ministry of the People and Social Development and Arima Mayor Ghassan Youseph. They enjoyed the challenge of trying to name the icons on the posters. It is really  interesting to see how sometimes we remember a face but forget the name of that person.
