Be Happy at 50 Design

OK so my neighbour, Percival Brathwaite, had his 50th birthday thanks giving a few months ago. I was asked to design the invitation and other complementary items. I was really excited to create somewhat of a logo first and then allow the other designs to feed off of it. I could remember his words ' Seon all you have to remember when you doing the design is to put beehappy at 50 and incorporate a bee and a pan.' I understood why he wanted beehappy because people call him Percy Bee so that was the link. The design came together after several failed attempts and in the end it proved to be quite suitable.

TTFF 2010 short film ident competition

I am no film maker but I enjoy coming up with interesting concepts no matter what the medium. So when I saw that TTFF was having a competition for youths under 28 to come up with a storyboard or script for a 30-60 second ident, I decided to participate. The concept needed to be based on their theme "You're in Focus", and for me that meant documenting something that we see every day but not necessarily notice - Highway Vendor.

On our way to work on our nation's highways, we see them plying their trade, precariously weaving in and out of traffic, selling everything from drinks and snacks to fruits and car accessories. This is what I think we should strive to represent more in our work as creative people. Power of De Word

So my good friend Taharqa Obika is having a Spoken Word Concert. For those of you who like poetry and would like to maintain a cool vibes this Saturday, this is the show for you. Featuring some of Trinidad's most captivating practitioners of the oral tradition. Names like Philomena, Muhammad Muwakil, Kizzie Ruiz, Keegan Maharaj, Ivory Hayes, Mistah Shak, Jervae Caesar, Lou Lyons, Naomi Abiola, North Eastern and Friends Choir and Taharqa Obika would be there. Tickets are still on sale......you can check the flyer below.

Ok so now onto my contribution in this whole thing. I was approached a few months ago by Taharqa to come up with a logo for this event. Now when you hear power of the word some how people automatically start thinking rebellion and revolution which translates into the clenched fist. I try not to be stereotypical as much as possible when I design, so it was a challenge for me to use what was existing and transform it into something contemporary and unique.

Preliminary Ideas

The final logo design had a retro feel to it with a stylized mic on top. The colours and the wings at the side of the logo also assisted to make the design visually appealing.

I also worked on the flyer and the ticket for the event.These also had a fun retro feel to it.

Ten Images for Ithaca 2010

Ten Images for Ithaca is a annual poster design competition that is held in Ithaca, Greece. This year the theme was Labels. You can find out more about the competition here. I had several ideas on the theme but one stood out more that the others, skin as a label. Just imagine putting a label on a person because of the colour of their skin.........and I mean a REAL LABEL. One that categorizes a persons ethnic makeup, personality traits, and value when related to other skin types. The design involved photographing various skin tones and filling out the Nutritional Value accordingly. The poster below is the one I chose for the competition. I did not win but I really think I want to continue the study. I am on the search for new skin so if you are interested drop me a line.

I always had an interest in photography ever since I was young. I remember jumping on my bike and riding up that menacing hill strait to Caura river where i would spend many hours photographing the lovely scenes around me. Back then I mainly took photos as reference to compose my paintings bus eventually taking photos became a separate creative release in itself. So recently I invested in a better camera than the point and shoot that I had before. All I have to say is that IT WAS WORTH IT!!! These are some photos that i took recently.

Anti-Everything - Iz D Man

This animation was produced at Full Circle Animation studio (I work there) for a local band called Anti-Everything.The song 'I'z D Man' is the lead single off of the Decision 2010 EP. 'Decision 2010' is a four song EP and content package centered on the theme of Trinidad and Tobago's 2010 General Elections. You can check them out here. This is the team that worked o the animation:- Rene Holder, Luis Vasquez, Judah Modeste, Makesi Aquan, Marcus Marshall, Alexander Rodriguez and myself. We all had our own varying styles coming in to this project but we came together and pulled it off in about eight days. This is the end result.

These paintings were commissioned for Island Beauty, a store that sells hairdressing equipment and products. The pieces were meant to be vibrant with hints of abstracted hairdressing equipments. I really enjoyed creating these paintings and I realize now that I really need to start back painting. I love it!!!!

T-Shirt Design Bp Renegades

BP Renegades T-shirt competition was held by bpTT last year. Artists were asked to submit an interpretive trilogy design that would commemorate bpTT's 40th year of sponsorship of the band and highlight the rich history of the BP Renegades Steel Orchestra. Myself and John Farfan came up with some unique designs and entered the competition. We came out as the first place winners. This design is one of three. Look out for the other designs in 2011 and 2012 panorama.

Design Solutions for Storyteller Taharqa Obika

After creating the animation 'Small Ting Mentality' with my friend Taharqa's story, we decided to stick together and work on other projects. His next move was to develop a book of short poems where each piece would be done daily over a space of a few months. My mission was to create a book cover that had a Caribbean feel with a contemporary look. So I started with the cliche imagery of sun, sand and coconut trees and then worked backwards;and then it came to me one evening just playing around in illustrator with shapes and text. I eventually conceptualized a typographic design with bold colors and clean layout. A superimposed coconut tree was also incorporated into the design to give that subtle feel of Caribbeaness. The illustrations I started off with were not wasted, they were used as supporting imagery for some of the poems in the book. So everything worked out fine. As an added bonus, a DVD with some of his live performances was given free with the purchase of a book. I also did the design for that DVD and a flyer to promote the book.

This was done while i was in work just fooling around with some images when the guys at work gave me the idea to use a friend's photo, which looks Avatar like, and mess with it. The funny thing was that he hates the movie with a passion and we only found out this after he saw what we did. But it was all good. Really funny trust meh!!!!

Political Landscape

When we talk about landscapes we usually think about spatial representations of the environment around us, but to me it is sometimes more interesting to present aspects of our landscape that are not easily exposed. Social issues such as crime and corruption affects us all on a daily basis either directly or indirectly, so why do some people view it as not being part of our landscape? This was my motivation for creating these pieces. I needed to express my views on the political landscape of Trinidad and showcase the views and opinions of others through my paintings.

Election Gimmick:- Elections in Trinidad is really interesting. We beg politicians for basic necessities for years but only around election time we would see these issues being 'halfway' addressed. They pave roads and clean streets in an attempt to silence us and convince us to vote for them, but isn't it ironic that the same index finger they use to silence us, is the same finger we use to vote for them. THE POWER IS IN YOUR FINGER.

I want your VOTE!!:- Uncle Patos (Patrick Manning-Prime Minister) running things. We saw the extent of this when he decided to allow a smelter plant to be constructed in this country with blatant disregard for the well being of citizens. But you know what, that is what you guys voted for.

Gaza mi seh and Gully for life!!!!

So this "Gaza and Gully" uprising that has been spreading from community to community got me thinking. I asked myself why we Trinidadians always following other people's culture? We are like a big piece of tracing paper. So you know the saying 'if you cant beat them join them so I decided to use the hype behind the 'Gaza and Gully' feud to promote my Key chains that represented the two waring fractions. I came up with this idea while just joking about the situation and thinking of creating something for a design exhibition UWI hosted. I got some valuable ideas from the guys at work and then decided to actually make the key chains. Now don't get me wrong, I am not promoting violence, so you would not find any key chains with weapons just cool hair styles, funky colors and funny expressions. Talk to meh if you want one!!

This 30 Second animation is an adaptation of the poster i designed for the festival. It did not make it to television but it played on the festival website, the 'Big screen' in Port-of-Spain, and during the festival. I got assistance from Stefano Caines and Alexander Rodriguez with the composition and animation. Thanks guys!

Red Bull Art of Can Competition.

Artists from all over Trinidad submitted artwork featuring Red Bull's iconic can to enter the annual Art of Can creative competition. The local leg of the award ceremony was held at The Corner Bar in Woodbrook, where Dave Cooper's Michael Jackson piece won. My piece 'D Pan Man' came in fourth. The four selected pieces represented Trinidad in the Red Bull competition in Jamaica. The images below are from the night at Corner Bar.

Small Ting to the World!

The animation reaching places that i can't reach yet!! In July it was screened in Caribbean Tales Film Festival in Canada. This was the first time my animation made it in a Film Festival outside of Trinidad so that was big for me.

Apparently the response was good because a few weeks later I was contacted (via Facebook) by a guy who saw the animation in the film festival and was interested of making it a part of a Caribbean Short film showcase that would be screened in Rode Loper Film Festival in Amsterdam and the Shoot Me Film Festival in Hague. His name is Emiel Martens, the Executive Director of Caribbean Creativity, an organization that promotes creative expression from the Caribbean. Yuh done know i was all for that so I send my stuff to him and that was that. Small Ting becoming ah Big Ting!!

Small Ting Mentality gets an Award

Animae Caribe Animation and New Media Festival has always been a outlet for local and Caribbean animators to get their work out there. I entered my animation in the 2008 animation festival with hopes of just getting my work screened and seeing the crowd's response. I was extremely pleased to find out at the end of the festival that i won the 'Most Outstanding Caribbean Animation' in the festival.

I still believe that i am not an animator i am just someone who enjoys creating animations.

Anti-Smelter

The anti- smelter uprising in Trinidad was a serious and major issue in 2007 and I took this opportunity to express my views visually through my work. I experimented with everything from propaganda posters to animation and even chalk art. I was very serious about most of the issues I dealt with in my work but overall I was just trying to have fun.

This piece entitled 'Stop D Smelter' was created in Photoshop and Illustrator. I enjoyed do this piece and the comical image of 'Uncle Patos' helped it even more. At the time i was researching a lot of Soviet union propaganda posters and i got inspired.

Chalk art has always been an integral part of Animae Caribe and i have enjoyed creating unique pieces. This was done at UWI for the festival.

The Beginning of Small Ting!!!

Now how i came about creating this animation is a crazy story in itself. It was final year UWI, film and video class, and i had to produce a three minute piece for my final assignment. I knew i wanted to create an animation but was not sure what to do. 'Thank god for weird coincidences because if it was not for Taharqa Obika and our collaboration, the Small Ting Mentality animation would be non existent. I met him in the computer labs at UWI, where he overheard me talking about my project and then he introduced himself as a storyteller trying to get his work out there. After that we just clicked, i brought up the idea of taking one of his stories and animating it and he was cool with it. You can join his group on facebook here.

So these are my preliminary sketches of the main character. I final design was created in Anime Studio which was also the program i used to animate the character. The drawings below are caricatures of the storyteller. Photoshop was used to color the drawing.

While I was at UWI ah brother had to make some money so I found someone who was interested in getting some carnival designs for screen printing so I created some options for her. She ended up just choosing one design but it was all good because i got some decent experience designing T-shirts. Illustrator was used to created all the designs and they are all original pieces not vectors downloaded from the Internet and placed together.

Carnival Imps

I remember this like if it was yesterday. We had to make a sculpture of a carnival character out of foil paper...............yes foil paper!!!! So I chose the Imps. So what i did was crumpled the foil and constructed the basic form and then i covered it with a thin layer of kite paper. Then I finished it with pieces of materials i had left back from another project. I think the gold axe was foil i got from some chocolate i was eating at the time.

Now I never particularly enjoyed creating abstract work but when i was introduced to cubism........ Well i tell you it was something i grew to love. This was another assignment that was given in the second year of my degree. The composition is actually a compilation of various cans, bottles and juice cartons. I made some sketches, mixed some paint, rustled up some canvas and painted this. I really love this piece.........something about the composition and the colors. (completed 2006)

$20 Budget Sculpture.

This was another assignment that i enjoyed. It was actually a challenge that required each group to create the tallest sculpture possible using $20 to buy the materials. So only $20................. what material would be the cheapest and structurally stable at great heights? The decision we eventually came to was to use newspaper which was relatively cheap and obviously accessible. We did a prototype first to work out the structural issues and then we did the final piece.

Potato Head gone Mad!!!

This piece was for an assignment I did in year one of my visual arts degree. I had to incorporate wire, paper and plaster paris to create a sculpture. It was comming down to the end of the semester and I was really frustrated so i just translated this to my work. I decided to do this figure with just a head and feet, screaming!!! Because that was exactly how i felt!!! Later on i realised it was like a potato head, remember that plastic toy that you could take apart. Any way i had fun making this one and especially the reaction on my mothers face when she saw it next to her washing machine staring her down, priceless!!!

3 Dimentional Form

Sculpture has always been another early passion of mine but it proved to be a bit more challenging and time consuming than painting. This sculpture, which was named "Man vs Technology" was constructed using antiprisms made out of aluminium sheeting. I used cement for the hand which was not my preferred choice but i used what i had at the time. The concept was birthed out of my need to find out who was really in control 'Man of Technology'. Obviously most people would say man because we are the creators, but some hold to the view that the very existence of it shapes the way we live our lives. So 'who running things!!!' well to tell you the truth i was not sure so i left up to the viewer to decide. Is the robot stamping the hand into the ground and showings it's authority or is the hand, which represents man, supporting the figure so it would not tilt over? You decide!!!
(completed in April 2005)

The process was very important in the development of the final sculpture. I paid close attention to proportion by creating a prototype to scale and then scaling it up to the actual size but using cardboard instead. This was just to make sure that I had the correct balance and shapes needed to make the final sculpture.

These pieces are from my beginnings as an artist. They were actually final assignments for my visual arts certificate at The University of the West Indies (2004/20050). This was my foundation, my first serious introduction into the craetion of art. I produced some of my best work back then. Good Times!!!
